The OrganizationFounded in 1939 north of Amarillo in the Texas Panhandle, Cal Farley's Boys Ranch ("Cal Farley's" or "Boys Ranch") is one of America's largest privately funded child and family service organizations, specializing in residential services provided at no cost to the families of children in its care. Residential programs offer a campus environment at the organization's flagship Boys Ranch where children live in homes or cottages, and basic-care services offer 24-hour supervision in a small, community setting where residents attend school and have a myriad of academic, experiential learning, athletic and other extracurricular opportunities. Houseparent couples, caseworkers, other adult mentors, and professionals guide the children to develop their potential and help them become principled, contributing members of society upon graduation or completion of their individualized therapeutic plans. Since its founding in 1939, Boys Ranch has been "home" to more than 9,000 children.
Governance & FinancesSupervised by a 19-member Board of Directors, Cal Farley's is led by an executive team of six, which in turn oversees 303 employees working at the Boys Ranch campus or the corporate offices in Amarillo. The organization's operating budget exceeds $41 million, with nearly three-quarters going to program expenses. Currently, the Foundation has more than $430 million in assets under management and is governed by a 9-member board, including the President & CEO.
The OpportunityCal Farley's has constantly evolved during its lifespan, remaining true to its mission of providing residential childcare in a Christ-centered environment while adapting to the changing research and regulatory environment of the childcare industry. It seeks a dynamic executive to build bridges across constituencies and chart its course for years to come. To achieve clarity on both strategic and tactical priorities, the next President & CEO will serve as a subject matter expert with the skills to draw consensus between the Board of Directors and senior leadership. The President & CEO must also be a superb communicator with a talent for engaging external constituencies locally and nationally and serving as a passionate spokesperson for the unique services that Boys Ranch provides daily. Finally, stewardship of Boys Ranch's financial resources is key for maintaining trust among donors and ensuring a sustainable future built upon a rich history of improving the lives of thousands of children and families. Reporting to the Board of Directors and supervising the senior leadership team, the President & CEO will be responsible for the overall management of Boys Ranch and its foundation. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Development of the Strategic Plan for Board review;
  • Execution of the Strategic Plan after Board approval;
  • Within normal operating environments, manage the business in such a manner that annual operating expenses, including actual costs of recurring capital maintenance and replacements, do not exceed operating revenues, including the contribution by the Foundation which does not exceed the spending policy limit imposed by the Board of Directors of the Foundation;
  • Oversee development and fundraising operations, to the extent possible, to ensure their adequacy on a current basis, their stability for the future, and their alignment with the philosophical ideals of the organization as it relates to donor development; and
  • Comply with all applicable regulations regarding investment, accounting, tax, and securities activities.
  • Ensure that Cal Farley's Boys Ranch is a contributing and supportive partner in the communities it serves;
  • Create a lasting impression to inspire donors;
  • Maintain strong ties to the media in communities the organization serves to uphold its image and properly communicate the nature of its services and needs to appropriate audiences;
  • Serve as the spokesperson for Cal Farley's mission to the community; and
  • Ensure the growth of the program by advocating for Boys Ranch and building trusting relationships with donors.
  • Ensure that the Board is fully informed of the organization's activities;
  • In conjunction with the Chair of the Board, develop the agenda for each board meeting and manage the logistics of the meetings;
  • Act as liaison between the Board and senior leadership; and
  • Maintain an open, collaborative relationship with board members to ensure board development.
  • Make recommendations to the Texas Education Agency regarding Boys Ranch Independent School District Board membership; and
  • Ensure the scope, quality, and appropriateness of the services provided to the organization by the BRISD.
  • Demonstrates sound business ethics including, but not limited to those outlined by Cal Farley's Model of Leadership and Service, Strategic Plan, policies, and regulations.

  • Supports the growth, development, and job satisfaction of all assigned subordinates by utilizing effective staff management techniques and maintains a high level of morale and enthusiasm among staff;
  • Provides timely and valuable feedback concerning job performance;
  • Employs an effective conflict management style;

      • Extensive, high-level experience as a senior-level executive in a multimillion-dollar organization engaging in strategic planning, program administration, fiscal management, staff development, fundraising, and physical plant management, ideally in the nonprofit sector.
      • Significant and relevant experience in residential childcare programs.
      • Successful work with a board of directors, as either a professional or a volunteer, and the gravitas to guide lay leadership to the successful completion of its objectives.
      • Successful track record and enthusiasm for donor cultivation and major gift solicitation including responsibility for making "the ask."
      • Demonstrated resourcefulness when setting priorities and the ability to execute multiple initiatives simultaneously, including through others.
      • Experience speaking publicly, meeting individually with donors or their representatives, generating supporters, and creating alliances with key groups and individuals.
      • Track record of leading organizations undergoing growth and developing and executing plans to meet short-term and long-term goals.Skills
        • Well-developed knowledge of strategic planning, budgeting and fiscal management, human resources, and marketing, including the ability ultimately to increase donor support for the organization.
        • Strong business sense and financial acumen and ability to generate reports in quantitative, qualitative, and narrative formats and to substantiate or provide additional information as necessary.
        • An understanding of the dynamics of complex nonprofit organizations and the ability to think in systems terms, thereby ensuring that the organization's day-to-day finance and operations activities support the organization's broader mission and its future needs.
        • Ability to inspire and motivate others through one's enthusiasm, personal standards of excellence, and dedication to the mission.
        • Superior communication skills that allow one to speak eloquently on behalf of an organization and to cultivate and sustain strong relationships with staff, residents, families, vendors, support agencies, and others.
        • Understanding of emerging issues/needs of the constituents served by Cal Farley's as well as the ability to work with staff and board members to devise resources and programs to assist Boys Ranch clients in meeting future challenges.
        • A talent for hiring, mentoring, motivating, and leading staff and comfortable delegating to competent second-line leadership while still retaining ultimate accountability.
