Nurse Practitioner (Orthopedic)

Job Description:

MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: Obtains and documents relevant health risks and medical history. Performs physical examination and assessment of on-going needs. Documents patient's progress and outcomes in Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) per VA policy. Orders and interprets of laboratory, radiographic, and other diagnostic tests. Formulates the appropriate differential diagnosis based on the history, physical examination and clinical findings. Reviews co-morbidities and consults with patient's Surgical Service physicians, Primary Care provider and/ or Anesthesia Service to obtain medical clearance for surgery. Works with OR personnel to schedule patients for surgery and coordinate proper instrumentation. Assists with patient positioning, stabilization, and prep of surgical site in the Operating Room as needed. Performs First Assist functions that include suturing, removing drains and casts, and debriding and packing minor wounds. Establishes a plan of care to achieve identified medical and health goals. Prescribes (and administers) medications which include controlled substances per licensure and in accordance with Utah State laws. Provides education and counseling to patients and family regarding pre-and postoperative care. Initiates referrals and/or consultations as appropriate to achieve an interdisciplinary plan of care. Works with discharge planning team to coordinate extended care facility placements, home health, home infusions, outpatient therapy, etc. as needed. Is proactive in identifying potential emergency/crisis situations and providing appropriate interventions. Provides call coverage for Orthopedic issues, whether during working hours or during non-business times, per set call schedule. Any other reasonable service or procedure that is within the legal scope and practice of a Nurse Practitioner. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday; 8:00 to 4:30 or as agreed upon with the possibility of extended hours and weekends. NOTE: Candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours.Financial Disclosure Report: Not requiredRecruitment/Relocation Incentive: May be authorized for highly qualified candidatesBasic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. (Must submit a copy) Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. (Must submit a copy) Nurse Practitioner: A Nurse Practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a Nurse Practitioner in a State, possess a Master's Degree from a program accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), and maintain full and current certification as a Nurse Practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. (This certification must be in a specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected)Certification: Must be certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or a Nurse Practitioner. Please list the state and number of your active, unrestricted license/certification.Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Note: Candidate's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. The recommended salary may be at any point in the range listed for this vacancy.Experience as an RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrates essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. The criteria are as follows:Practice: practice, ethics, and resource utilizationProfessional Development: performance, education/career developmentCollaboration: collaboration, collegialityScientific Inquiry: quality of care, researchPhysical Requirements: The incumbent must be able to perform all activities of the position without restriction. This position involves considerable standing, walking, stooping, bending, reaching, lifting and turning. It requires repositioning patients and assisting with transferring patients to wheelchairs/stretchers. Mechanical devices when available are required to be used for heavy or difficult to lift patients. The work may involve pushing or lifting weight in excess of 50 pounds and going up and down flights of stairs. The position requires visual and auditory acuity at a level to provide safe and effective nursing care.
