Responsibilities

The Medical Records Technician assumes responsibility and accountability for providing coverage in various staff positions for employees who are absent from the Health information Department. On a daily basis the Technician assumes the responsibility of any task that needs to be done. This excludes the Coding Department. Hours and days fluctuate according to coverage needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED

  • High school graduate or equivalency
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Work under time constraints
  • Typing skills of 40-50 words per minute
  • One to two years' experience in the Health Information Department
  • Courses in medical terminology and other related medical record courses preferred

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to read, write and converse in English
  • Ability to communicate with patients, families, staff, physicians, support agencies, vendors and others
  • Ability to remain calm and composed under stress
  • Ability to respond to pages, telephones and other auditory stimulation
  • Ability to evaluate and interpret information and make independent decisions
  • Bending, lifting (10+ lbs), grasping, fine hand coordination, pushing and pulling, prolonged standing and/or sitting
  • Dexterity of upper extremities and fingers, as well as mental dexterity for accurately sorting medical record documents
  • Ability to flex neck for sorting documents
  • Strong concentration skills and ability to review images on a computer monitor that are stationary or in motion
  • Must be ableto read poorly handwritten communication
